Until the building of the Narrows Bridge, Staten Island's only connections with New York were ferries that crossed the harbor to Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The bridge is named for Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano, the first known European navigator to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River. Completed in 1964, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world. It's known throughout the world today as the starting point of the New York City Marathon.
